Chapter 27 He Was Smiling
Chapter 27 He Was Smiling
“No,” Nathaniel smiled again. “The nurse only got some of the data wrong. That is all.”
“Really?” Alexia frowned, an odd feeling creeping up.
“Of course. If there was a problem, how could I, as a doctor, not tell you?”
With that, Alexia finally stopped asking questions and was able to relax. She was relieved to hear there wasn’t a problem.
“Sister, now it’s time to check your heart,” Nathaniel said, naturally changing the subject.
Alexia followed him towards the CT room.
Walking for a while, Nathaniel casually asked, “By the way, sister, you mentioned that your mother preferred boys over girls, right?”
Alexia nodded. “Yes, why do you ask?”
“Nothing.” Nathaniel turned back, looking back at Alexia’s piercing and profound eyes. “Just curious.”
Alexia pursed her lips. “They just think only sons can pass on the lineage…”
“Although this has been the case since ancient times, there are always some exceptions…” Nathaniel responded, hinting at a secret meaning.
“What do you mean?” Alexia asked, cocking her head in confusion.
“Nothing.” Nathaniel smiled as he took out a magnetic card. “Here’s the CT room. Please, come in.”
“Okay.”
*****
Two hours later, the checkup was finally over.
Alexia sat on the chair in the hall as she gratefully took the cup of water Nathaniel offered.
“Thanks.”
“No thanks needed, this is what I do as a doctor,” he said winking at her.
Alexia blushed as she lowered her head. Her shy and embarrassed look amused Nathaniel. Although some might say Alexia wasn’t very beautiful. Her charms came to the forefront when she was shy and blushing. It was a pity she married Chaim, otherwise Nathaniel would’ve pursued her. He hadn’t had a woman like Alexia as a girlfriend before.
Nathaniel suppressed the inappropriate thoughts, and looked at his watch, “Sister, please head back to my office to rest. Chaim should also be there. I will come find you after I receive the results.”
“Okay.” Alexia drank the water and headed over to his office.
However, when she arrived, there was no one there except for a nurse. ‘Did he leave?’
Alexia looked around disappointedly before turning to the nurse. “Have you seen a very tall and good- looking gentleman?”
“Are you asking about Mr. Lancaster?” the nurse asked in conformation.
Alexia nodded. “Yes, do you know where he went?”
“Mr. Lancaster has gone to see Ms. Chi in the special class ward.”
“Ms. Chi?”
‘Could it be Evelyn?’ she thought.
“What floor is it on?”
“Ninth floor.”
Alexia intended to visit Evelyn. She was really curious about the woman that Chaim wanted her to donate her bone marrow to. Not only that, but she wanted to know once and for all the relationship she had with Chaim. She knew their relationship was clearly more than simple friends.
Ding!
The elevator climbed to the ninth floor.
When she arrived, Alexia searched through the rooms one after another, until finally finding the one she was looking for.
“This is it.”
Since the door was closed, Alexia decided against knocking and instead stood outside, watching the figures inside. She couldn’t see much through the glass on the door except for half of the bed and Chaim sitting in a chair.
Alexia was a little disappointed, until she covered her mouth in shock. Was he smiling? Alexia stared at his face incredulously for a long time as she clenched her fists until her hands ached from her nails digging into her palms. She suddenly understood why she never saw Chaim smile. It wasn’t that he never smiled, but that the person who made him smile wasn’t her.
Alexia bit her lips. She wanted to cry, but fought back the tears with unwillingness and self-deprecation.
Buzz!
The mobile phone in Alexia’s handbag rang. The suddenness of the phone call caused Alexia to drop her bag.
In the ward, Chaim turned his head towards the door, making eye contact with Alexia’s panicky face. Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
‘Why is she here?’
“Chaim, what’s wrong?” Evelyn asking in concern, seeing Chaim suddenly frowning,.
“It’s nothing,” Chaim said, tucking the blanket around Evelyn. “Nathaniel is outside, I’ll take a look.”
“Why don’t you let Nathaniel in?” Evelyn’s deep-set eye asked in confusion.
“There’s no need, he’s too annoying and will disturb you.” With that, he walked toward the door.
As soon as he stepped into the hall, he saw Alexia running toward the elevator.
“Alexia, stop!” Chaim shouted in an icy voice.
Alexia stopped. She turned to look at him and hung her head in shame.
Chaim walked up to her with an unreadable face. “Why are you running?”
Alexia stared at her shoes without uttering a word. She honestly didn’t know herself. Either way, she wanted to get away before he could ask any more questions. She hadn’t meant to disturb them, but he discovered her anyway.
“Did Nathaniel finish the exam?” Chaim asked.
Alexia nodded. “Mm hm…”
“And the results?”
“They’re not out yet.”
“Then what are you doing here?” Chaim asked, staring closely at her. “How did you know I was here?”
The questioning in his tone made Alexia feel uncomfortable. “I didn’t see you after the checkup, so I asked the nurse,” she responded, quickly changing the subject. “Is that Evelyn Inside?” Her eyes flicked to the ward door.
Chaim didn’t reply as a tacit acknowledgement.
“Can I meet her?” Alexia squeezed the chain of her handbag tightly and looked at him nervously.
Chaim immediately refused, his face reddening. “No!”
“Why?”
“No reason. Anyway, go back to the office. I’ll get the results later.”
With that, he went back to Evelyn’s room, leaving Alexia standing alone in the hall.
“Are you finished talking to him?” Evelyn asked as she closed the book and weakly smiled up at Chaim.
Seeing her thin frame, his face showed some concern. “Why are you sitting up? You need to lie down and rest.”
“My body is getting stiff, just let me sit up for a while,” she said grabbing his arm and shaking it in a pout.
Chaim could never refuse her when she was like that. So he agreed after looking her over carefully.
“Put this on, don’t catch a cold,” Chaim said picking up a thick jacket for her.
Evelyn obediently put it on while asking, “Chaim, what did you say with Nathaniel? You’re always so mysterious.”
