Chapter 25
Chapter 25 She's The Substitute
Emily almost fled, not even having time to snatch her glasses back from Jackson's hands, rushed straight for the exit.
A black Maybach, like a panther in the dark night, was parked under the shade of trees at the entrance of the venue. Emily took a long look before finally confirming that it was Mr. Satan's car and hurried over.
Mr. Satan still wore his white mask, opening the passenger door for her and smiling as he looked at her, "Why the rush? Was there a tiger chasing you?"
Emily grabbed Mr. Satan's hand, using his strength to easily hop into the car and slamming the door shut.
What was Jackson's deal just now? Suddenly taking her black-framed glasses and saying those inexplicable words.
Emily didn't want to dwell on it, so she forced herself to calm down and smiled, "No, just worried you were waiting too long, so I rushed over."
Mr. Satan raised an eyebrow but didn't pursue it further, starting the car.
This was her first time riding in Mr. Satan's car. The interior was extremely clean and tidy, devoid of any excess decoration, understated yet luxurious, fitting his character perfectly.
"How was your first day at work?"
Emily nodded, "Not bad. Although the boss's temper isn't great, he's reasonable."
Mr. Satan was pleased for her, "As long as you like it, you can continue. Emily, as I've said before, you should be more confident. Your life isn't just about cooking and doing laundry. You're young, and there's a big world out there waiting for you to discover." Emily tugged at her lips, feeling a warm breeze in her heart.
The difference between people was too great. Nathan married her, treating her like an unpaid maid, while Mr. Satan supported her, encouraged her, and led her into a life she had never experienced before.
"I think I can handle it."
"What?"
"Work and life. I like this job, I can do it well, and I can take care of you."
"We can hire someone for household chores."
"But you've given me a lot of money and saved my dad... Mr. Satan, I've always regarded you as my benefactor. You pulled me out of darkness when I was at my lowest point. But I can't think of any way to repay you, except maybe doing household chores, which I'm good at..."
Mr. Satan interrupted her, "Emily, I never needed your repayment."
"Then you..."
"I want your heart. I want you to bear children for me, do what you want to do. Understand?"
Emily's nose felt a bit sour.
She bit her lip and glanced at him from the corner of her eye.
Mr. Satan had a sharp jawline. Although half of his face was covered by a mask, Emily could still tell that he was very handsome.
Emily couldn't understand why such a handsome and wealthy man would be so good to an ordinary woman like herself.
The story of a prince falling in love with a Cinderella is a fairy tale, something she used to read as a child. She's no longer at an age where she easily believes that fairy tale love could happen to her. "Emily, what are you afraid of?"
Emily shook her head, "I don't know. I know nothing about you. Our only connection is Room 2307 at the Hilton. If you were to suddenly disappear one day, I wouldn't even know where to find you."
A stifling atmosphere seemed to permeate the air.
Emily explained, "I don't want to force you to take off your mask. I don't want to invade your privacy. I'm just afraid of giving my heart sincerely, only to end up abandoned in the end. I've tasted that feeling once, and I understand how desperate it can be." Silence.
The city center was illuminated by lights, and the Maybach traversed the streets, the air inside the car seemingly about to solidify.
Emily kept her head down, not speaking any further.
Mr. Satan has already done a lot for her, perhaps she shouldn't ask for more.
"Emily," Mr. Satan softly called her name.
Emily looked up, "Hmm?"
"Do you really want to know?"
Emily hesitated for a moment, but couldn't help asking, "Can I?"
Mr. Satan's fingers tapped on the steering wheel, seemingly making a final decision, then he spoke, "If you want to know, there's nothing I can't tell you."
Emily's heart seemed to be suspended in her throat, thumping loudly.
Emily clasped her hands tightly, "I want to know."
At least after knowing the truth, she could make the right decisions and face him with the right attitude in the future.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
"You remind me of someone from my past," Mr. Satan said.
A chill seemed to run down Emily's spine.
A hint of loneliness flashed in Emily's eyes, "Someone from your past? Was she someone you loved?"
"Yes," Mr. Satan replied, "I loved her, very much."
"Then...why aren't you together with her? Did...something happen to her?"
Mr. Satan shook his head, his smile somewhat bitter, "No, she's fine. But she's already married."
Emily's smile felt a bit forced, saying that she felt no heartache would be a lie. She had once thought of countless possibilities, but she never expected the truth to be like this. She was just a substitute.
But it was also okay. Mr. Satan was at least honest with her, telling her the truth before she completely entrusted her heart to him.
It's just that this truth was somewhat cruel.
"You should make an effort," Emily lowered her head, her eyes slightly stinging, "Maybe if you had been more proactive at the beginning, she would have chosen you."
Mr. Satan seemed lost in thought, his gaze becoming misty, "Yes, if I had been braver at the beginning, perhaps our present would not have turned out like this." "Mr. Satan, you still love her, don't you?"
"Yes, I still love her very much."
"Then if...I mean if, if she had a change of heart and returned to you, how would you arrange me?"
Mr. Satan glanced at her, reaching out to affectionately ruffle her hair, "Instead of worrying about these what-ifs, why don't we think about what to eat tonight?" He didn't want to answer that question directly.
Emily understood, he was trying to change the subject.
She smiled, but the smile quickly disappeared from her lips, turning her head to look out the window, "I'm okay with anything, really."
She had been so enchanted by Mr. Satan's meticulous care and affection that she had lost her sanity, actually believing that she had significance in his heart. Emily chuckled bitterly at herself, laughing at her own overestimation.
The lesson from the Reed family wasn't enough for her, she actually still hoped for another eligible bachelor to love her.
"Emily, are you crying?"
She turned her head, "No, why would I? I found a job I like, with a good salary. Why would I cry?"
