Chapter 76. Fool
Nosh POV
I dropped the call and called my assistant immediately.
“Chris, call an emergency meeting with the PR team. Britney has gone to the internet to target Brians. Act fast and call off all those negative reports. Pay everyone and take everything down. If you need to file a case, file a case. And don’t let Britney leave the country. File for a restraining order and hold off all her travels abroad.”
“Yes, boss. I will do it.”
When Chris hung up, I called Brent.
“How much damage has it cost the Fords?” asked.
“Their stock prices went down to almost twenty percent overnight.”
I shook my head. “That’s bad.”
“Yeah. Hunter Enterprises also suffered a loss.”
We were silent on the line. I was thinking about how to turn the events around and recapture what we have lost.
But the losses couldn’t be reversed right now. It will at least take a day or two for the turnaround to take effect.
“Britney is not giving up huh? Hell, hath no fury like a woman scorned.” Brent muttered sardonically on the other end.
“You should have ended everything years ago. Why didn’t you?”
That stumped me.
“She is the perfect decoy,” I admitted a bit shyly.
“For whom? Your ex–wife?” Brent sounded incredulous.
I sighed. I really did not know why I did that. But I answered Brent as truthfully as I could.
“Yeah. I don’t understand why it was imperative back then to let Briana know that I was having a grand time – that divorcing her was the best choice. You see, even when my mind can’t remember her, I have this irrational perversion of wanting to

make her jealous.”
“You are crazy.” Brent muttered under his breath.
But I heard him, and I could not agree more.
“Yeah. I know. I was foolish.” Self–deprecation laced my voice.
Brent snickered.
“Jealousy is a bitch. Look at Britney.” He added.
I shook my head and sighed.
“No. It was not jealousy. It was greed. Britney wanted my money. I did not think she wanted it so much that she used my predicament to her advantage.” I said contemptuously.
“You should have ended it when you learned about her duplicity.” Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
“I can’t. I need Britney to show Briana.” I insisted.
“And there goes your life, down the drain.” He declared.
We were silent until Brent spoke.
“You can always issue a medical report claiming you have amnesia and post- traumatic stress disorder from the accident. Britney used that information to her advantage. It would also clear things up with Briana. You were not of sound mind when you divorced her.”
I sighed. If only it were that easy. I would cling to any lifeline by now.
“But that would be subject to verification by the courts and too risky for the business. Besides, I don’t want Briana to forgive me just because I was not mentally stable at the time. It will only invalidate her sufferings and pain of the last five years.”
“Well at least, you will get to clear things up.” Brent countered. He still believes that admitting my medical condition five years ago would be the best option all around.
But I was not convinced. There must be some other way.
I shook my head. “No.”
“You are saying you will take the cudgels for her?”
I nodded, though Brent wouldn’t see me.
Yeah it’s just about it. I don’t want to make Briana regret the last five years. It’s all my fault. 1 believed Uncle Matt. That is all of me.”
Brent sighed
“You really are an idiot. What are you proposing to do?”
I watched the house from across. My eyes settled on the children’s room. Even when
I could not see a thing, I knew it was their room.
“Chris is doing damage control. It will blow over in a day or two. And…”
I swallowed hard.
“I will talk to Marcus. I won’t make a fuss if Briana would agree to date Luke Bennett.”
“Are you sure that is the best solution?”
“It’s the only thing I can think of to clear her name. Briana is dating Luke Bennett. It will make Britney’s claim inconsequential.”
“At the risk of breaking your heart? What if Briana finds Bennett to be the better man?” I could hear the panic in Brent’s voice.
I pressed my clenched fist to the middle of my chest as if the act would alleviate half of the pain I was feeling inside.
It was suicide. I know that if I let Braina go, there is no turning back.
“I will back off. I will clear the path for her and Bennett. I was only in her life because of our children.”
Brent sighed.
“You are such a fool!” Brent muttered before hanging up the call.
