When fate plays its hand

Chapter 858

Nelly froze, and her face was etched with disbelief. Her hands and feet turned ice–cold, and her body trembled. “You… you knew about that?”

Timothy scoffed. “Do I look like someone who can be played for a fool?” He definitely wouldn’t raise another man’s child.

As a direct descendant of the Cooper family, every child is tested at birth, including a paternity test. So, he had never once doubted Sam’s parentage.

As for Nelly and her tricks, they were easy enough to uncover with just a little digging. She thought she had outsmarted everyone and fooled the Cooper family for over 20 years. But the only fool in this situation was her.

She looked at him with a dazed expression. “Why? If you already knew, why even ask me?”

“Because without something bigger forcing your hand, would you have ever admitted to all those ‘minor‘ things you thought weren’t a big deal?”

What had she blurted out in her panic earlier?

“You can accuse me of hurting Minnie or blame me for scheming to marry you, but you can’t question Sam’s identity.”

Those words were exactly what Timothy had been waiting to hear.

“You… you…” Nelly stammered. She said coldly. “You set me up? Even the divorce papers your assistant handed me earlier were just for show?”

Timothy sneered. “I’m very pleased with Sam as my son, and the family elders are too. I won’t divorce you for his sake.”

Nelly’s heart finally relaxed.

“But there won’t be any more children,” he added.

Her expression went blank in disbelief.

Timothy continued, “You’ll always be Mrs. Cooper because you gave me a son and an heir for the Cooper family. But that’s all it will ever be.”

He looked around, then added, “I won’t be coming back to this house again, and I won’t answer your calls either. Every month, you’ll receive a fixed allowance. Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.

“You won’t be allowed at any social events. A maid will be with you at all times, whether you’re at home or out, to make sure you don’t do anything that would tarnish the title of ‘ Mrs. Cooper.‘

“And if you ever decide you want a divorce, just contact my assistant. We’ll set up a time,

and I’ll meet you at the family court.

“Other than that, we’ll have no reason to cross paths again. You should thank Sam. If it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t have the life you do now.”

With that, Timothy walked away. His belongings would be packed and moved out later.

Nelly snapped back to reality and immediately rushed after him. She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist from behind. Her grip grew desperate.

“No… Tim, please don’t do this to me,” she begged. “We have feelings for each other… I… I was wrong. I’ll apologize to Minnie. I’ll beg my parents for forgiveness…

“Please don’t leave. I won’t interfere with your life anymore. If you want to be with Minnie or anyone else, I won’t stop you. Just don’t do this to me…”

She felt as though being abandoned by him was worse than being thrown into exile.

Yes, she valued being Mrs. Cooper and enjoyed the prestige that came with it. But now, what was left for her besides an empty title? She couldn’t even live a normal life anymore.

Suddenly, Nelly caught sight of Sam standing at the doorway. “Sam! You’re back. Please talk to your dad. I’m your mother, and he can’t treat me like this…”

“Dad,” Sam said calmly.
